How To Build a Drama-Free Home

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Have you ever thought about how much we experience in our home life?  A lot goes on in our homes.  We rest in them, we cook and have our meals, we entertain, we bathe there, usually more than one person lives there, a family, we watch TV there, we use the computer and cellphones there, we collect our ‘stuff’ there.  And, much more.  We live physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually in our homes.  This is easy to recognize at times, and, not so easy to recognize at times.  I sometimes use the word drama because it’s a lot to deal with all at once. One definition of drama is ‘any situation or series of events having vivid, emotional, conflicting, or striking interest or results.’   Being human, we can experience these types of circumstances at different times and moments in our life, especially in our homes. 

 

There are the 3 ways that I bring peace to my home.   Each one of them helps relieve the drama and brings harmony to my home life.  These can be shared individually or they can happen all at once. If we practice these qualities in our homes, it will help those that are in our homes as well. Live simply so that others may simply live.  These 3 ways to peace in our homes are simply simple practices to support us in all aspects, emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. 

 

 

Make Family Meditation & Prayer a Priority

The first one is practicing being quiet. Taking time for silence and meditation. Practicing prayer.  These are all ways to take care of ourselves within our home life.  This is helpful to practice every single day.  Both in the am and pm.  The quiet time is actually connecting us to our spiritual connection to God, Jesus or Source.  I created Jesus in the House as a reminder every single day to connect, meditate and pray.  I call this a daily prayerful pause for love, ease and grace.

 

 

Create a Home Altar

The second practice is creating a home altar.  An altar is a sacred space that you nurture with things that matter to you most.  Flowers, pictures or Energy Portraits, candles, a prayer, House Charms for specific prayers, some incense, Jesus in the House, etc.   Really whatever means something to you, it’s very personal.  Nurturing our altar daily brings a sacred sense of peace and harmony from within that nurtures ourself and everyone in our home.  The altar can be a communal altar, located in the living area, where everyone uses it or it can be more personal, located in a bedroom or office.  Really whatever speaks to the circumstances.  We can pray and meditate with the altar as well.  It’s a living space that creates less drama and more love. 

 

 

Cleanliness Is Godliness

The third practice is keeping a clean home.  Living in a dirty environment or with clutter can actually affect our wellbeing, causing stress and anxiety which then causes drama. Living in a clean environment externally helps us feel clean and pure from within.   This is the Maria Kondo approach to life.  If we keep our home lives simple, it helps create less drama and more freedom in our lives.  Our ‘stuff’ does affect us internally as well.  So, being aware of this and nurturing this everyday along with our altar, prayer and meditation will help us personally and those around us mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. 

 

Try all three of these practices daily and see how your home life will be more peaceful with harmony, ease and grace.  It takes intention everyday with gratitude to change from drama to peace.  It’s so freeing to nurture ourselves and our home life.  Share with us your experiences with these practices.  Blessing you and your home.

What Are the Healing Benefits of Amethyst?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I have always loved the color purple since I can remember as a young girl.  I would do anything to have purple in my life.  I’d wear purple, I’d paint my room purple, I’d color with purple, I even had purple cabinets in my kitchen.  Now, I have purple hair tinsel in my hair and I wear purple amethyst everyday.  Purple blesses me on a daily basis and helps me keep connected spiritually. 

The amethyst crystal is very special to me because it comes from our amazing planet earth.  Such wisdom comes from the earth and crystals share this wisdom as well as magic.  It’s beautiful to be able to wear this crystal and have it around my home. I have it in my bedroom, on my altar and I have it tattooed on my left wrist.  I cannot get enough of purple and purple amethyst.  

There are many qualities that I love about this crystal.  It’s a very powerful stone for transformation and healing.  It opens the crown chakra and helps us connect to the divine. Connects us to our spirituality, allowing faith to flow in. And, it’s very calming and brings a feeling of safety.  Sometimes it helps heal physical and emotional ailments as well.  There are so many different ways that amethyst supports us.  These are some of the ways that it moves me.  My nervous system feels peaceful and calm overall from the beauty of this stone. 

I believe that in today’s crazy times, we need daily reminders to slow down and take care of ourselves.  One special way is connecting with the amethyst crystal.  It is used to help us feel imaginative and sensitive, compassionate and kind, selfless and unworldly, intuitive and sympathetic.

The beauty is that the amethyst crystal can support us with its many different qualities wherever we go.  We can wear it, adorn our altars and homes with it, our gardens with it. 

This is my amethyst ring as I’m typing this blog post, that I wear everyday.  Also, my tattoo on my left wrist with an amethyst bracelet.

May Picks: Spring Forward Into Mindfulness

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Anyone else have so much going on this Spring that it feels like you’ll never get it all done?  My To Do list these days is craziness!  I’m moving across country next month, and I’m packing a whole house that I’ve livd in for three years.  My son is graduating high school, so I have parties and family visits to plan.  I’m launching a new website with tons of cool new products while also working on product development for a whole new collection.  Managing five social media accounts, keeping up my exercise routine, making sure there’s food on the table for dinner… are ya feeling me?

I have to work just as hard as everyone else to maintain a Slow Living lifestyle when so many things are on my plate.  Like you, I have to literally make time to slow down and take care of myself, and these are the products I turn to when I need a little nudge toward mindfulness…

What I Learned From Doing TM Everyday For a Year

I’ve been practicing TM, also known as Transcendental Meditation, for a year now.  All is can say and share is WOW.  I have really transformed over these 12 months of remaining quiet, silent and somewhat still two times a day for twenty minutes.  You don’t have to remain completely still, but silent, yes. I had no idea what I was getting into but felt in my heart that I needed it and it was time. 

 
I came across TM several times in my life, but I didn’t listen the first two times.  Finally, due to being diagnosed with hypertension, I heard the third call and answered it immediately.  I signed up for a four day course, about 2 hours each day, to learn TM from a certified teacher.  I was in class with several other precious people needing TM in their crazy lives as well. 

Here’s the truth of the matter.  I was so stressed and anxious, for quite a long time, meaning years, and my body was calling out.  Because I was so ready, it was like a fish finding agua. It just felt like I came home to myself.  Let me explain.  I’m a type A personality, I am on the go, things to do, things to create, things to share.  I always have another idea that I’m following, dreaming about, keeping up with.  I’m also on my second marriage with four kids living apart from my husband while my youngest is in high school. A stressful circumstance, for sure.  So many different stressors yet I’m not feeling all of that stress, even with the same things going on in my life.

My 12-month Journey

When I first started, it was interesting as I found myself so exhausted that I needed to take a nap after meditating. I would sleep for 20 minutes or so. My teacher shared with me, this is the stress leaving your body.   I had accumulated so much stress in my body and it was literally leaving my body, I felt it.  After several months of releasing the stress, I started feeling calm and very focused.  I haven’t been a very focused person, really I was ADD.  Feeling calm, focused, and inspired are new ways that I live.  I have always loved the phrase, “Live simply so others may simply live.”  This way of life is living simply. I’m more connected to myself on a profound, simple level everyday and the process is so simple, healing and a miracle.

How I’ve Changed

TM’s motto is “Do less, accomplish more,” and oh is this so true.  I’m  productive, clear, calm, confident and connected to myself and what it is I’m focused on.  This is all because I practice  TM  two times a day.  I have also found that my family benefits from my TM as well.  If I’m calm, they‘re calm.  Absolutely brilliant.  It’s accumulative healing, and it helps others.  Yay! 

I feel that it’s life changing, everyday,  because it just happens for me, I don’t have to think about it or if I miss it, it’s Ok, I just sit in my next meditation.  I’ve been around for 54 years, close to 55 and I’ve ‘tried’ a lot of different ways to ‘heal’ myself, be calm, to slow down my life and enjoy the moment.   Journaling, collaging, painting, church, therapy, diets, massages, exercise, coaches, courses, programs, etc.  And, this by far, my friends, is my answer to a rich, deep, inner landscape that nurtures every aspect of my life, inside and out.  TM is truly a miracle. TM is the inspiration.  My body, mind, soul and spirit lives in gratitude on a daily basis.  Such a great way to start and end each day knowing that I’ve practiced my TM. 

TM is the answer to being stress-free.  Being silent with my TM mantra two times a day has become to me my new ‘religion.’  Or, my new consistent go-to. I love God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and this just connects me on a deeper level with my spiritual life. I always meditate first thing in the morning and I have been known, especially in the beginning, to miss my second one for the day. Eventually that changed, because I enjoy it so much, I don’t want to miss it.  They told us that you’ll be able to meditate wherever you are.  This is really true.  I’ve practiced my TM on a plane, a train, and in my car before a meeting while in the parking lot.  I’ve been at a friend’s house and shared, “I need to take a break and meditate now.”

Getting Started With TM

There is an abundant amount of info at TM.org if you find yourself interested in learning more.  There is also so many studies and research in all the different ways that TM is touching people’s lives.  I believe there are 5 million people practicing TM.

TM is offered in all major cities, go to TM.org, put in your zip code and their TM center will come up. It’s a very friendly process and, yes, it does cost money to become a TM meditator.  It was worth every penny in the $960.00 I paid.  It paid off in the first 90 days for me. Once you’ve completed the class, you’ll have a specific TM mantra that you’ll use every meditation.

Brain benefits of Coloring (Plus Free Mindful Coloring Pages)

As long as I’ve been coloring due to my own grief from the loss of my sister, I have felt it release my stress and help me heal from many aspects in my life, not just grief.  I’ve been coloring daily for 27 years, and we’re now hearing that coloring is actually beneficial to releasing stress and affecting our brains in a positive way.  What’s really cool for me is that I’ve been nurturing my brain while coloring all of these years! An extraordinary added benefit that came with coloring all these years!

How Can Coloring Relieve Stress?

Coloring really does activate our brains since there is a movement action which connects our brain to our body.  There are many studies today showing the results of how coloring shifts our brain in different ways. “Coloring is said to calm the amygdala, the part of the brain related to the fear/stress response while stimulating the parts of the brain responsible for creativity and logic. A 2005 study documented a reduction in anxiety in subjects after a short time of coloring geometric patterns.  In fact, coloring therapy is being used experimentally for those with anxiety and stress related disorders. Some people report sleeping better when coloring for even 5 minutes before bedtime.” (From Wellness Mama)

Coloring activities activate both parts of the cerebral hemisphere

According to psychologist Gloria Martinez Ayala, the action of coloring involves both logic and creativity. When we use logic to pick up a color for a particular shape or pattern, we activate the analytical part of the brain. On the other hand, when we choose to mix and match colors, we activate the creative side of the brain. This helps incorporate both areas of the cerebral cortex which control vision and help with coordination and fine motor skills. Take Your Coloring to the Next Level 

Does it matter what you color?  It does if you’re coloring for healing.  I’m a huge advocate for coloring anything from a unicorn in a kid’s coloring book to a doodle in your journal.  But for those of us utilizing coloring as a means to heal difficult emotions, release negativity and empower our intentions, there’s MINDFUL COLORING!!  By choosing a meaningful word while holding an intention while we color, we can actually feel the healing while we color.  It’s a simple process.  Just hold what it is that you need in your mind (a prayer, healing or a miracle), then start coloring as if it’s a meditation.  Be silent, calm and peaceful by keeping your breathing deep and slow.  

The most important key to receiving all of the amazing benefits of mindful coloring is consistency. It really needs to be a daily habit, even if it’s five minutes.  The consistency is where the healing is, and it’s where the change occurs for the brain, for stress,  anxiety, and depression.

What Is Mindful Coloring?

[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row”][vc_column][vc_column_text]What is mindful coloring?   Mindful means “attentive, aware, or careful,” and coloring is “the act or method of applying color.” Mindful coloring is when we understand what we are feeling and associate that with an intentional color.  It is the process of holding an intention to heal in our body, mind, soul and spirit while we color.  

Coloring is a unique way to bring mindfulness to your life.  Life is full of circumstances and situations on a daily basis that deserve our attention.  We hear so much about mental health these days, anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, grief, bullying, etc. There are so many ways that we can feel indifferent and mindful coloring is a great remedy for healing. The Cleveland Clinic shares that, “It’s no secret that mindfulness is the key to achieving reduced stress levels. Instead of worrying about decisions made in the past or things too far ahead in the future, mindfulness keeps us committed to the present.”

I can totally relate to being mindful as I’m coloring.  Coloring has been a part of my journey for 25 years due to the loss of my sister.  For a long time I didn’t know that I was coloring mindfully.  I discovered, in a self-taught way, that I was healing through mindful coloring the tremendous grief that I was experiencing.  My coloring had an intention that happened organically, and I felt better. 

There is healing in the action of connecting to an emotion, pairing it with a color, and allowing your hand to release the emotion onto paper, canvas, or a coloring book/card deck.  The action, with the mindful intention, is the miracle. 

5 Ways to Address Emotional Challenges with Mindful Coloring

  1. If we are mindful coloring about feeling anxiety and depression from social situations, we can use the color blue for peace, calming and healing.  Also, you can add silver for compassion and stability. 
  2. If you’re struggling with PTSD and your intention is to stay calm in stressful situations, choose the color brown for comfort and healthy boundaries. 
  3. With the intention to “take care of yourself in the moment.’  If you are being bullied and your intention is “I feel hopeful in this circumstance.” choose the color green for hope and feeling calm.
  4. If you are experiencing loss and grief, choose the color purple for prayer and spirituality or the color indigo for faith. State your intention as “ I will say a simple prayer right now” or “I have faith this grief will pass.”  
  5. If we are in a challenging relationship with a loved one, we might use the color yellow for light, clarity and purification or orange for courage and confidence. State your intention as, “I take care of myself before anyone else.”

We can mindful color anywhere and at anytime to help ourselves.  Just carry your coloring cards and pens/pencils with you, and you’re ready to experience this powerful, transformative healing!
